Trek beneath towering trees, spot black-and-white colobus monkeys, enjoy lunch at Mandara Hut, and finish with spectacular panoramic views from Maundi Crater before descending back to the park gate

07:30 AM – Pick-up from Town Retreat Accommodation

Your guide will meet you at Town Retreat Accommodation for a short safari briefing before departing. Drive towards Marangu Gate. Drive Time: Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes from Moshi .

09:00 AM – Arrival at Marangu Gate (1,870 m)

Activities include:

  • Park registration.
  • Meet your mountain guide.
  • Final equipment check.
  • Safety briefing.
  • Toilet break.
  • The hike officially begins through.
  • Kilimanjaro's beautiful rainforest.

09:30 AM – Begin Hiking

The trail gradually climbs through dense tropical forest. During the hike you may encounter:
  • Black-and-white Colobus monkeys.
  • Blue monkeys.
  • Wildflowers.
  • Ancient fig trees.
  • Numerous bird species.
Your guide will make regular stops for photography, hydration and interpretation of Kilimanjaro’s ecology.

11:00 AM – Forest Rest Stop

Take a 10–15 minute break. Enjoy:

  • Drinking water.
  • Energy snacks.
  • Stretching.

01:15 PM – Arrive at Mandara Hut (2,720 m)

After approximately 4 hours of hiking, reach the first overnight camp used by summit climbers. Enjoy:
  • Packed picnic lunch.
  • Rest.
  • Visit the ranger station.
  • Learn about Kilimanjaro climbing expeditions.
Mandara Hut is surrounded by beautiful rainforest and often offers sightings of playful monkeys.

02:00 PM – Walk to Maundi Crater

A gentle 15–20 minute walk leads to Maundi Crater. Highlights include:
  • Panoramic views of Northern Tanzania.
  • Views toward Kenya on clear days.
  • Excellent photography opportunities.
  • Learn about Kilimanjaro's volcanic history.
Spend approximately 30 minutes enjoying the scenery before returning to Mandara Hut.

03:00 PM – Begin Descent

Descend through the rainforest. Since downhill hiking places more pressure on the knees, trekking poles are highly recommended.

05:30–06:00 PM – Return to Marangu Gate

Receive your Day Hike Certificate (where applicable), sign out with park authorities, and meet your driver.

06:15 PM – Drive Back

Relax during the drive while enjoying views of villages and coffee farms.
